ITINERARI New Mexico, Arizona, California & Maryland

Despite of New Mexico and Arizona states seems very interesting, we were running out of time so we just experienced the large highways which took us to L.A where Mireia was expecting us. We picked her up in the airport and we drove up to the coast until Carpinteria. We slept in a motel and from this city we visited two areas: Santa Barbara, whose beaches were really nice and Santa Maria and its surroundings fulls of vineyards, where the movie “Sideways” was shot. Next stop was in San Simeon where we came over the Hearts castle, well known by its architecture and the famous people from Hollywood who where hosted in either. We kept following the coast enjoying the beauty of its landscape and watching tons of elephant seals laying in the sand . Traveling up north to Half Moon Bay, we spent one night in Kathy’s and Alice house. There we had a nice dinner talking with them and her friend Mari Lou who made us feel like being at home.
The following day we drove to San Francisco, a particular and wonderful city with its up and down slope roads, a big harbour, green parks, the Alcatraz jail, and different neighborhoods like Little Italy, Chinatown or Castro which is known for its challenge of the gay and lesbian rights. Finally, we drove across the gorgeous Golden Gate Bridge until Berkeley where we visited the University.
Next step was facing two Nationals Parks. One was Yosemite National Park recognized for its huge amounts of granite stones, waterfalls and landscape. And the other was Sequoia National Park well known for having the trees with the biggest amount of wood in the world. As a curiosity, General Sherman’s tree has 11 metres of diameter.
After that, we came back to L.A and we started exploring it. The city is huge, bad communicated and leaving the car made difficulties higher due to explore it. However, we visited the Kodak Theatre, the Street of the Fame and the Chinese Theatre in Hollywood; Santa Monica and Venice beaches; Beverly Hills and his famous Rodeo Drive Rd where the most expensive shops are located; and finally, the Downtown that didn't have any appeal at all. In that city we couchsurf one more time. It was with Jon and Liz, with them we had a very good time and they gave us a lot of information about the city, like the meaning for many people who goes to live in looking forward to fulfill their dreams, sometimes successfully and other times turning out to big deceptions, or how in L.A everything is make up in a few moments and disappear in the same amount of time.
We went along with Mireia to the airport and then we realized how fast time goes by. Not only for the last two weeks, also for the last months because after that, we flew to Washington where we visited the White House, the National Mall and Arlington Cemetery, staying at the house of Brian and Lauren, and it was time to took the next flight to China!!! New sensations and experiences in our road!

Moments

Mireia Sala Isern

When Ariadna and Eduard decided to take the trip, we all knew that sometime, somewhere our paths would cross again. After seven months, that particular moment arrived on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, specifically in Los Angeles.
When you start planning a trip, with friends, family or a couple, many sensations and illusions come to your mind. In my case, this happened in the days before I left home. Thoughts and moments came together bringing nervousness and anxiety that shook all my body, wanting to live that special moment that I had dreamt of since the date of their departure; our meeting.
From that moment on I would go along with them, sharing all those experiences that traveling would offer us, and as they say in the title of their blog, this would happen in "un moment d'incertesa global" which means a period where the world is trembling.

ITINERARI Virgina,Tennessee,Mississippi,Louisiana & Texas

Ready to drive we would liked to get Virginia across Shenandoah National Park to experience there spectacular views, but we changed our minds because of the bad weather conditions, the fog and the rain. That's why we drove on the highway until Nashville, where we arrived at Natchez Trail Pkwy, a small road canopied with vegetation that was sprouting. There was no traffic, we were just sourrounded by trees and an awesome environment that made our trip pleasant all the way Mississippi. Next stop was Vicksburg. We walked next to the Mississippi River and we came upon some old and spectacular cotton plantation houses dated back to in the nineteenth century, whose architecture and big gardens are still admired by the tourists for their beauty.
Following the river we arrived at New Orleans, a city where Louis Armstrong was born. Ii is a special place, with a famous center full of shops, pubs and music called French Quartier, a financial district with skyscrapers in front of the river, and a detached-house neighborhoods. We spent two days in a place where Katrina's damage is still present. However, nice and careful houses with great gardens were in the second house we slept in. Although we didn't go to any music show, we heard music everywhere in the streets, where people played the guitar, violin or improvised jazz.
We left Louisiana in order to go to Texas, we stopped in Austin, the capital which has many cultural acts and lots of music attractions. We had the chance of seeing a great performance of country music at Jenny's little Longhorn. Apart from that, the city didn't have more interest for us, except for a natural pool near the center. We walked around some ranches between small villages like Wimberley, Bandera or Fredericksburg, but their extensions were so big that we couldn't see any cattle from the road.
We kept driving on 10 Hwy until Sonora where we spent one night feeling the cold heavy wind. From that point we started passing miles and miles in the middle off nowhere, in dry lands and long roads. We arrived in Marathon, a tiny village with deserted houses, junk in the gardens and a silence just broken by the wind. It was there where we found the best place we've ever slept, La Loma del Chivo. We were very surprised by its structure, rounded small houses made of paper, although it seems impossible. The result is perfectly amazing and they are decorated using different colors and all kinds of recycling materials. In short, there is some work of art in any part of the house. In addition, Guil and Stan where two excellent people!
From there we entered Big Ben National Park, which receives fewer visitors than any other national park in this country. In spite of that, it was very interesting to visit a desert full of cactus and bushes, and to soak in a natural hot spring just a few meters from the border of Mexico, next to the Rio Grande. The beautiful rocky Chisos Mountains complete the panorama.
We left the village of Marathon and kept driving on our way to California, where we were expecting a special visit from home!

ITINERARI Georgia, New York & Pennsylvania

Everybody Knows that in the States everything is huge, a coke, portions of pizza, cups of tea, skyscrapers, highways, etc. but we want to add that we met awesome people that make us easy to move to everywhere.
We arrived in Atlanta (Georgia) by aeroplane while was snowing, something weird in March and a friend came to pick us up fortunately, she was our first Couchsurfer, a member of the virtual community that host people and ask to be host when they are traveling like us. She was Caroline and we had a nice time with her and her roommates Liah and mad. Atlanta seems an uninhabited city, is a residential place where everybody moves by car and streets are always empty, for us the most important thing was visiting the Martin Luther King Jr. Museum, where is showed his life, thinking and all around the black people movement that was fighting for their rights.
After a few days we took the bus until New York where we faced adapting our new environment. First of all we bought a mini laptop, more economic and easy to have one of this than use the few and expensive cybercafes in the city. Secondly, we rented a car because we'd like to travel to remote places, to get to scenic roads and we would have more independence after 6 month using public transport. We loved New York, there were a lot of things to visit: we went to the touristic places in Manhatan, we saw the city from the top of Empire State Building, walked around Central Park, visited museums for instance MOMA, art museum. We were impressed. We went out at night and during the day...and also, we visited Brooklyn, Particularly places that were built as huge warehouses or factories that now are cool places such as restaurants and expensive lofts, where all cool young people would like to live. In Manhattan we couch-surfed again. This time with Martha Ma. All of us together chatted a lot and exchanged traveling experiences and we got tips for our travel.
We were excited about driving a big American car with automatic transmission. It's this car that will get us started on the trip to the West coast. The first stop was Lancaster, Pennsylvania well known its Amish people.
In that city, a welcoming family took us in. They let us see their customs and the ways of their community. They, Clair, Anna and their children Kirsten and Brennen were so helpful. The way they live and their anxiousness for knowledge led us into long conversations. We learned a lot about them and the Amish who are more conservative. We were lucky to visit Anna's parents house and spent a Saturday with them making some apple jam and learning the process to make some other products that they sell in their own shop. We cooked some pasta with mushrooms to thank them their kindness.
Next place was Gettysburg, where we spent one morning around the most important battlefield of the Civil War. That battle in 1863, was what permitted to Union forces to proceed to get the power some years later. Our guide was a CD which gave us the tour, explained to us where we had to go and where to stop every time and explained all the stories about every interesting point, during 2 hours.
Anyway, something that is so different from what we are used to are the measures. We 're used to changing euros for CFA, pesos, dollars, soles or bolivianos during our trip. But now is incredible, we use Fahrenheits instead of Celsius degrees, or miles, inches and yards instead of Kilometers, meters and centimeters for distances, gallons instead of liters, feet for the altitude, acres for square meters, pounds instead of kilos and...in fact, we never know which day or month we are at, although this hasn't changed yet!

We reached Bolivia, crossing the border near the Titicaca’s lake. We spent one night in Copacabana and then we took a boat to Isla del Sol (we talked about it in the Aymaras's text). After that, we went to the capital, La Paz, sometimes chaotic and untidy, and it was very surprising for us to see people who were working like a shoeshine boy wearing a balaclava.
We went south to Oruro, famous for its carnival, where we took the train until Uyuni where we visited the Salt Flat (we mentioned it in ”No Només Pura Sal”) and then we came over Tupiza for a few days.
Next step was Potosi, the highest city in the world, 4000m above sea level, which is well known for its mining traditions since the last 500 hundred years. Once there, we visited them and we were able to feel just a little bit like what these people experience in their lives. Besides, we can assert that the city is pretty cold but comfortable, and people are very easygoing so a long stay is pretty advisable.
Facing ……. East we got to Sucre, the ancient capital of Bolivia, with its whitewashed colonial buildings and peaceful atmosphere that let us has a tremendous rest. We spent a week in a magnificent familiar house, exchanging our experiences with other travellers and celebrating the Carnival. In fact, the Carnival has been taking place every day and it has lasted after fifteen days; there was always music and people who threw water balls everywhere, something that it wasn't always funny for us. Anyway, we realized that we were in the continent of the best Carnivals and most of the people had longed for these days with extremely anxiousness.
Our last stop was in La Paz where we took an airplane to Bogotà, where we spent some days preparing our next trip to the States!!

For us another reality, an unknown world, a place where we are interested in, among dark narrow corridors, a lot of dust and suffocation air; for others their work place although they know it means to die or a shorter life. We recommend you a good documentary to see, "Devil's Miner", WHICH was recorded in the same Cerro Rico (Rich Mountain).
The mines are exploited by Cooperatives. However, the work is individual, working hours are not under control, there's no security, the miner's age is not regulated...everyone tries to find a rich zone of minerals and when they get it, they work long hours without stopping, chewing coca leaves to reduce their fatigue and their hunger, eating once a day in the morning, without more space than a few square meters, without more light than a torch, without more hope than to achieve some minerals. In short, they are Cooperatives but their most important task is being in charge of celebrations or festivities, which has great importance for them.
When you get inside one of these mines it seems that time didn't go by , conditions and material are pretty the same than 500 years ago. In the same way, they have a lot of beliefs from that period of time, as well as the existence of The Tío.
When colonisation arrived at Potosí they made up a Dios (God) whom natives could fear inside the mine. As in the quechua alphabet they don't pronounce the "d", It was soon called Tios and finally,Tío. He's represented like a devil, and it is located inside every single mine, and nowadays the miners still adore him and ask for protection offering presents and prayers. In fact, the miners believe that their luck inside the mine is on to the Tío's hands. But It is difficult for us to think that anything else can improve their conditions, purchasing power, way of working...
Inside the corridors you feel darkness, anxiety, uncertainty, silicosis, lack of education, premature death, luck, pollution and fear. Is Everything in hands of The Tío?
You can be insensitive in front of that. When you reach the sun outside, you are not able forget that entire people who are almost living inside that hole. That's another experience that we'll never forget about our trip, but this time not for its beauty.

Shane

Excited from the cinema always the classics have been me touching. Obviously there are many types of films in the cinematographic industry, drama, comedy, musical comedies, erotic, historical… but you always have predilection for one of them. In my case, since I was a kid I have been always fascinated by the westerns.
I remember when my father and I made efforts to mobilize the substraction of the family in order to press that famous red button of the video, the REC, in order to keep on extending the video library of Can Sala, and afterwards, time went by resting in front of the TV and admiring those fabulous movies which reflected the changes due to colonization and fights of powers that reshaped the American society in every state.
The list is extensive, from The Man who killed Liberty Valance, with a great performance by Lee Marvin; Rio Bravo with John Whayne and Robert Mitchum; High Noon with Gary Cooper and the beauty of Grace Kelly; Stagecoach another time with John Whayne; Sergeant Rutledge with Woody Strode and Jeffrey Hunter; The Man from Laramie and Winchester 73 with James Stewart; Gunfight at the Ok Corral with Kirk Douglas and Burt Lancaster, and a length etc. All of them are particular, especial, different from one to another, but there is one that especially impact our family with a great deal, even to my sister, who normally couldn’t stand this sort of movies, it was Shane.
The trip is so amazing, as much passionate, as rich, that the mixture of stages, smells, and people drive us vividly and fastly to the past thanks to the composition among images and words interconnected in this range of time between past and present. Thus, meeting an Australian guy, thin and slender, friendly, and adventurous, who got a mind to know and see as much as he can travelling around the world, before he comes back to his Australian shores, has allowed me relieve that work of art, performed by actors of first level, such a young Jack Palance, acting as a gunman on salary, without neither sentiment nor ideals further than his whisky his guns and expecting to show to everyone that he was still the fastest gunner in the far west, the Alan Ladd, as a regretted gunman, turned bitter, sad, loaded of values, loving the lost causes and willing to start a different life somewhere his past wasn’t known, and Brandon De wilde, Joey, a young kid with a tiny body where his blond hair highlighted radiant and whose smile and tenderness captivated the world.
Along with the Australian guy, we have performed, remembered famous passages of the movie, we have shared them with other backpackers and the biggest moment comes when we say goodbye because the day has gone, and it arrives that great and magic moment when we claim louder, Don’t go Shane, Shane don’t go, Shane!!!Thus, this is the name of the Australian guy.
