ITINERARI Oklahoma i Texas

We weren’t extremely surprised about Oklahoma, but it was OK. Our first stop: Claremore, birthplace of Will Rogers, a famous cowboy, actor, traveler and also philosopher at the beginning of the 20th century. We visited Thalequah and his Cherokke small Indian village in order to know better their culture and their way of life in the past. After a while, we came back to Route 66 driving through Stroud, one of the inspiration places for the film Cars and the Lightening Mc Queen. Finally, we arrived in Oklahoma city, where we met Marta, Jens, Kenya and Nil. It was really nice to meet them so far from our homeland .
After a couple of days, we hit the road again and we arrived at Michita Mountains where we came across a huge buffalo walking in the middle of the road. We stopped the car and we felt not just excited, but also slightly scared. After a few seconds the buffalo was following his path without paying any attention to us. We drove through different roads in the middle of a dry and rocky landscape, stopping to watch some funny prairie dogs and other groups of buffalos not as near as the first we had found. A few miles from there we headed to Texas.
We had a great time in north Texas. We tried to avoid big cities as Fort Worth and Dallas, and we focused on small towns and their landscape, full of ranches and horses that shape this beautiful area.
Pilot Point is the town where we got in touch with remarkable people. Eating at Jay´s cafe and having some beers in Löwbröws, with his owner Bob and some of the costumers, they let us spend a couple of great afternoons.
Visiting some ranches in the area, we met Monica, a Catalan woman who´s running a ranch and lives there. Jay and the guys from de bar show us the best scenic roads to reach Fredericksburg. A town that we were a couple of years ago and we stayed in the same place enjoying the company of the owners of Fredericks Motel, George and Debbie. Moreover, we went in the same amazing restaurant where we had eaten the best rib eye steak and we did it again.
After a couple of days, we drove to Austin, looking for the natural pool at Barton Springs which was located a few miles outside the capital. That day we slept on the outskirts of San Antonio and early in the morning we met and had a nice talk with Yazmin, who had been visiting his family in Nuevo Laredo.
Finally, we head to the center of San Antonio where we spend two days going around the river walk and visiting the famous Alamo. We left our rental car and we reached Laredo by bus, ready to cross the border.

ITINERARI Illinois i Missouri

O'Hare Airport, Chicago. Adaptació ràpida als canvis d'horari, temperatura, llengua i habituals símptomes d'incorporació a un nou medi.

O'Hare Airport, Chicago. We adjusted quickly to new timetables, weather and languages. From the sky we realized what kind of city Chicago would be, a well-defined skyline following the Michigan Lake and a big amount of neighborhoods extending the city. We spent our first night in a hostel near Lincoln Park. Next day we got in touch with Jordan, member of Couchsurfing and we spent 3 days with him, one of them sailing into the big lake, from the boat Chicago’s view was just great. We visited the Loop with the centenary train rails above the streets and we walked around the city, heading Millennium Park and walking through the sidewalk around the lake, swimming in one of his small beaches.
After a few days we showed of our rental American car with AC. We started with Route 66, after some miles we reached Arthur where we stayed 2 days surrounded by the Amish community who were still working in spite of the 100 degrees. Once there we met Carol, Bill and Devore workers of our motel, we had a nice chat with them.
Getting back to Route 66 we arrived in Litchfield, we stopped in the old Ariston Café (1945). After that we drove through to Missouri heading the Katy Trail (small green road, well-known by cyclists). Portland was our next stop and it was really worthy because of the girls that we met in a apparently closed café, but really full of live. Mile after mile we crossed the Ozark Lake area, where we could see and intensively aquatic activity and thousands of apartments, malls, hotels and adds hiding the glamorous landscape. After sleeping near Springfield we kept forward on the road to visit another State.

Fortunately, life is a sinuous path with its ups and downs, where we attempt to mitigate the buried heights that allow us to follow the string for achieving our personal legend. This is very well characterized by the shepperd in the novel the Alchemist of Paolo Coelho. Being based in what the main character has learnt in the past, using the wit, the intuition, the reading of signs, new stages and realities, let him reconfigure his knowledge in order to achieve his most valuable goal, his personal legend. We read it like a praise to the particular thought as a maximum expression to attain his goals, with regard to the exchange and transformation of knowledge among people.
Therefore, following this individual aspect as a bedrock, privilege to preserve and enforce, people are able to establish ties based on values, interests principles that end up shaping a personal character that is met at the same time sharing it those with communities, groups or friends. Therefore we find villages, regions, associations, college mates as a representative instrument of shared personal legends.
Nowadays, we can even go further than villages, regions and states, because the space parameter is relative, because we can cut down time despite of we are aware that’s unstoppable, and because knowledge is an inexhaustible source for the creation of new wealth for our personal legends or new ones using new tools in a different reality of life.
It is like this, that we can assert that the administrative boundaries of personal legends are vanished, that the colors of the people who share them are from a huge arrange of tonalities and the modalities of generating wealth, social and economical model have gone transformed, reaching a payoff of shapes which where unimaginable on the times of conventional industry era. Thus we can find entrepreneurs from Timbuktu and Camprodon working together, “Camprodonins” social activists collaborating with people of Ouagadougou, Santa Marta or New Orleans, new sorts of online exchanges services without using the conventional currency, demonstrations for the rights of the farmers of the valley of Camprodon and receiving the support of Senegalese painters of Ile de Gore or Architects of Shanghai and so many others trough the net.
This new reality we have been able to live in first person, in the middle of “nowhere”, in a place bathed with strong wind and a pungent sun disguised of colors, where we have found a population with remembrances of places grotesque and with a look of carelessness, ascertained by the great amounts of instruments and spoiled cars that bathe the streets and the homes of the 400 inhabitants of Marathon in south of Texas.
Here is where our writing recovers its sense, thanks to the La Loma del Chivo, our hostel in Marathon as the icon of a personal shared legend. It is nourished by Stan and Guilford, two people whose way of living is based on the new models of people's lives on this twenty first century like the Aymara.
They are able to live in this corner of the world because the new technologies have reduced space and time in an overwhelming way, regarding to the new models of life because they have the knowledge to generate new wealth through the computer and because they exalt in the way of renewal energies and the art of the recycling; using the natural resources (eolian, solar energy) and recycled materials (70% of the structure of La Loma del Chivo is made combined of a mass of paper with concrete). Considering that their project fills with social, ecological and economical values into account it goes to being of interplanetary reach!.
We are already part of this shared personal legend, at the same time that we keep following our legends towards the inexhaustible and charming paths of the twenty first century

3 fulles d'enciam

One of the key aspects of the differences between continents are the breakthroughs in high tech, although we are aware of most of general assertions fail by definition and they lack accuracy into account.
Is in this sense that in a country like EEUU we have experienced the changes in habits and people’s comunications trough the introduction of new technologies. Some arrived in Europe and other possibly on the way.
Thus, we want to highlight two different points in all of this. The first, that high tech allows you being in touch at anytime and anywhere in the world with anybody. As result of that, there's a negative aspect because you don’t pay attention of people who are around you, but also there’s a positive side that comes directly trough our minds, just glancing back the trip we’ve done letting us being in touch with our families for such a long time.
So this changes due to new technologies, in one hand let us see many bars with a lot of people on their own, people on the streets talking by earphones and others using iPods and iPhones permanently. On the other hand, this new tools make easy our access to information, let many people to work from home and keep us up dated about the fresh news in the world.
The second point is the rise of the philosophy of Do It Yourself in shops, bars, restaurants and others. And this issue has two different aspects too. By one side, once the consumers acquire how to use this new tools, then they can customize his product, so they can get it as fast as they want, with the amount of sugar that they desire, the 3 leaves of lettuce in their sandwich and even the exact amount of metro car. On the other side, you may be involved in situations that you have to choose between white and black because grey doesn’t exist dealing with machines and you require someone to talk to desperately.
All in all, we think that our capacity of adjustment with the new technologies is what will allow us to live happy. Thus, it will depends on everyone of us to find out the best way to fit this breakthrough in our common live and gave its importance when it really is deserved.

ITINERARI New Mexico, Arizona, California & Maryland

Despite of New Mexico and Arizona states seems very interesting, we were running out of time so we just experienced the large highways which took us to L.A where Mireia was expecting us. We picked her up in the airport and we drove up to the coast until Carpinteria. We slept in a motel and from this city we visited two areas: Santa Barbara, whose beaches were really nice and Santa Maria and its surroundings fulls of vineyards, where the movie “Sideways” was shot. Next stop was in San Simeon where we came over the Hearts castle, well known by its architecture and the famous people from Hollywood who where hosted in either. We kept following the coast enjoying the beauty of its landscape and watching tons of elephant seals laying in the sand . Traveling up north to Half Moon Bay, we spent one night in Kathy’s and Alice house. There we had a nice dinner talking with them and her friend Mari Lou who made us feel like being at home.
The following day we drove to San Francisco, a particular and wonderful city with its up and down slope roads, a big harbour, green parks, the Alcatraz jail, and different neighborhoods like Little Italy, Chinatown or Castro which is known for its challenge of the gay and lesbian rights. Finally, we drove across the gorgeous Golden Gate Bridge until Berkeley where we visited the University.
Next step was facing two Nationals Parks. One was Yosemite National Park recognized for its huge amounts of granite stones, waterfalls and landscape. And the other was Sequoia National Park well known for having the trees with the biggest amount of wood in the world. As a curiosity, General Sherman’s tree has 11 metres of diameter.
After that, we came back to L.A and we started exploring it. The city is huge, bad communicated and leaving the car made difficulties higher due to explore it. However, we visited the Kodak Theatre, the Street of the Fame and the Chinese Theatre in Hollywood; Santa Monica and Venice beaches; Beverly Hills and his famous Rodeo Drive Rd where the most expensive shops are located; and finally, the Downtown that didn't have any appeal at all. In that city we couchsurf one more time. It was with Jon and Liz, with them we had a very good time and they gave us a lot of information about the city, like the meaning for many people who goes to live in looking forward to fulfill their dreams, sometimes successfully and other times turning out to big deceptions, or how in L.A everything is make up in a few moments and disappear in the same amount of time.
We went along with Mireia to the airport and then we realized how fast time goes by. Not only for the last two weeks, also for the last months because after that, we flew to Washington where we visited the White House, the National Mall and Arlington Cemetery, staying at the house of Brian and Lauren, and it was time to took the next flight to China!!! New sensations and experiences in our road!

Moments

Mireia Sala Isern

When Ariadna and Eduard decided to take the trip, we all knew that sometime, somewhere our paths would cross again. After seven months, that particular moment arrived on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, specifically in Los Angeles.
When you start planning a trip, with friends, family or a couple, many sensations and illusions come to your mind. In my case, this happened in the days before I left home. Thoughts and moments came together bringing nervousness and anxiety that shook all my body, wanting to live that special moment that I had dreamt of since the date of their departure; our meeting.
From that moment on I would go along with them, sharing all those experiences that traveling would offer us, and as they say in the title of their blog, this would happen in "un moment d'incertesa global" which means a period where the world is trembling.

ITINERARI Virgina,Tennessee,Mississippi,Louisiana & Texas

Ready to drive we would liked to get Virginia across Shenandoah National Park to experience there spectacular views, but we changed our minds because of the bad weather conditions, the fog and the rain. That's why we drove on the highway until Nashville, where we arrived at Natchez Trail Pkwy, a small road canopied with vegetation that was sprouting. There was no traffic, we were just sourrounded by trees and an awesome environment that made our trip pleasant all the way Mississippi. Next stop was Vicksburg. We walked next to the Mississippi River and we came upon some old and spectacular cotton plantation houses dated back to in the nineteenth century, whose architecture and big gardens are still admired by the tourists for their beauty.
Following the river we arrived at New Orleans, a city where Louis Armstrong was born. Ii is a special place, with a famous center full of shops, pubs and music called French Quartier, a financial district with skyscrapers in front of the river, and a detached-house neighborhoods. We spent two days in a place where Katrina's damage is still present. However, nice and careful houses with great gardens were in the second house we slept in. Although we didn't go to any music show, we heard music everywhere in the streets, where people played the guitar, violin or improvised jazz.
We left Louisiana in order to go to Texas, we stopped in Austin, the capital which has many cultural acts and lots of music attractions. We had the chance of seeing a great performance of country music at Jenny's little Longhorn. Apart from that, the city didn't have more interest for us, except for a natural pool near the center. We walked around some ranches between small villages like Wimberley, Bandera or Fredericksburg, but their extensions were so big that we couldn't see any cattle from the road.
We kept driving on 10 Hwy until Sonora where we spent one night feeling the cold heavy wind. From that point we started passing miles and miles in the middle off nowhere, in dry lands and long roads. We arrived in Marathon, a tiny village with deserted houses, junk in the gardens and a silence just broken by the wind. It was there where we found the best place we've ever slept, La Loma del Chivo. We were very surprised by its structure, rounded small houses made of paper, although it seems impossible. The result is perfectly amazing and they are decorated using different colors and all kinds of recycling materials. In short, there is some work of art in any part of the house. In addition, Guil and Stan where two excellent people!
From there we entered Big Ben National Park, which receives fewer visitors than any other national park in this country. In spite of that, it was very interesting to visit a desert full of cactus and bushes, and to soak in a natural hot spring just a few meters from the border of Mexico, next to the Rio Grande. The beautiful rocky Chisos Mountains complete the panorama.
We left the village of Marathon and kept driving on our way to California, where we were expecting a special visit from home!

ITINERARI Georgia, New York & Pennsylvania

Everybody Knows that in the States everything is huge, a coke, portions of pizza, cups of tea, skyscrapers, highways, etc. but we want to add that we met awesome people that make us easy to move to everywhere.
We arrived in Atlanta (Georgia) by aeroplane while was snowing, something weird in March and a friend came to pick us up fortunately, she was our first Couchsurfer, a member of the virtual community that host people and ask to be host when they are traveling like us. She was Caroline and we had a nice time with her and her roommates Liah and mad. Atlanta seems an uninhabited city, is a residential place where everybody moves by car and streets are always empty, for us the most important thing was visiting the Martin Luther King Jr. Museum, where is showed his life, thinking and all around the black people movement that was fighting for their rights.
After a few days we took the bus until New York where we faced adapting our new environment. First of all we bought a mini laptop, more economic and easy to have one of this than use the few and expensive cybercafes in the city. Secondly, we rented a car because we'd like to travel to remote places, to get to scenic roads and we would have more independence after 6 month using public transport. We loved New York, there were a lot of things to visit: we went to the touristic places in Manhatan, we saw the city from the top of Empire State Building, walked around Central Park, visited museums for instance MOMA, art museum. We were impressed. We went out at night and during the day...and also, we visited Brooklyn, Particularly places that were built as huge warehouses or factories that now are cool places such as restaurants and expensive lofts, where all cool young people would like to live. In Manhattan we couch-surfed again. This time with Martha Ma. All of us together chatted a lot and exchanged traveling experiences and we got tips for our travel.
We were excited about driving a big American car with automatic transmission. It's this car that will get us started on the trip to the West coast. The first stop was Lancaster, Pennsylvania well known its Amish people.
In that city, a welcoming family took us in. They let us see their customs and the ways of their community. They, Clair, Anna and their children Kirsten and Brennen were so helpful. The way they live and their anxiousness for knowledge led us into long conversations. We learned a lot about them and the Amish who are more conservative. We were lucky to visit Anna's parents house and spent a Saturday with them making some apple jam and learning the process to make some other products that they sell in their own shop. We cooked some pasta with mushrooms to thank them their kindness.
Next place was Gettysburg, where we spent one morning around the most important battlefield of the Civil War. That battle in 1863, was what permitted to Union forces to proceed to get the power some years later. Our guide was a CD which gave us the tour, explained to us where we had to go and where to stop every time and explained all the stories about every interesting point, during 2 hours.
Anyway, something that is so different from what we are used to are the measures. We 're used to changing euros for CFA, pesos, dollars, soles or bolivianos during our trip. But now is incredible, we use Fahrenheits instead of Celsius degrees, or miles, inches and yards instead of Kilometers, meters and centimeters for distances, gallons instead of liters, feet for the altitude, acres for square meters, pounds instead of kilos and...in fact, we never know which day or month we are at, although this hasn't changed yet!
